Via dell’Abbondanza, Pompeii’s main thoroughfare — best walked in the early morning hours.

Buy your ticket online. The official website of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii allows you to book your entrance in advance, avoiding the ticket office queues — which on peak days can exceed 45 minutes. The cost is the same; the time saved is enormous.

Explore the secondary routes. Most visitors follow the same itinerary. But the Ruins cover 66 hectares, and many areas — Regio V with its recent discoveries, the Porta Ercolano district, the lesser-known large thermal complexes — remain almost deserted even at peak hours. Bring a paper map or download the official app.

Tip From Michelangelo’s Home, the Ruins are reachable on foot in around 20 minutes, following Via Sacra towards the Forum. A pleasant walk that passes through the historic centre of modern Pompeii.

Bring water and comfortable shoes. The cobblestones and Roman basalt roads are beautiful but uneven. In summer the site is almost completely exposed to the sun: a hat, sunscreen and at least one litre of water are essential. There are refreshment points inside, but prices are typical of a tourist attraction.

Finally, a tip that few follow: don’t try to see everything. The Ruins can easily fill an entire day if visited thoroughly. It’s far better to choose five or six places that genuinely interest you and experience them at your own pace, rather than rushing through dozens of domus without stopping.
