Pompeii needs no introduction. The city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD is one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world, and the reason is simple: nowhere else has time stopped so completely \u2014 where houses, frescoes, everyday objects and even the shapes of human bodies have remained intact for nearly two thousand years.<\/p>

The problem, as many know, is the crowds. In summer months and on weekends, the main routes \u2014 Via dell’Abbondanza, the House of the Vettii, the Lupanare \u2014 become corridors of tourists. The solution is not to avoid the Ruins, but to visit them the right way.<\/p>

“Arrive at 9:00 AM, when the gates open. You’ll have at least an hour before organised groups start filling the main paths.”<\/em><\/p>

Choose the right time.<\/strong> Entrance opens at 9:00 AM (winter hours) or 9:00 AM with closing at 7:00 PM (summer). Arriving at opening time means having the alleyways almost to yourself. Alternatively, the last entry in the afternoon \u2014 two hours before closing \u2014 offers golden light and fewer visitors.<\/p>

Buy your ticket online.<\/strong> The official website of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii allows you to book your entrance in advance, avoiding the ticket office queues \u2014 which on peak days can exceed 45 minutes. The cost is the same; the time saved is enormous.<\/p>

Explore the secondary routes.<\/strong> Most visitors follow the same itinerary. But the Ruins cover 66 hectares, and many areas \u2014 Regio V with its recent discoveries, the Porta Ercolano district, the lesser-known large thermal complexes \u2014 remain almost deserted even at peak hours. Bring a paper map or download the official app.<\/p>

Tip<\/strong> From Michelangelo’s Home, the Ruins are reachable on foot in around 20 minutes, following Via Sacra towards the Forum. A pleasant walk that passes through the historic centre of modern Pompeii.<\/p><\/blockquote>

Bring water and comfortable shoes.<\/strong> The cobblestones and Roman basalt roads are beautiful but uneven. In summer the site is almost completely exposed to the sun: a hat, sunscreen and at least one litre of water are essential. There are refreshment points inside, but prices are typical of a tourist attraction.<\/p>

Finally, a tip that few follow: don’t try to see everything.<\/strong> The Ruins can easily fill an entire day if visited thoroughly.
