There is a widespread misconception about Pompeii: that it is merely an archaeological site surrounded by souvenir shops. It is understandable \u2014 most visitors arrive, tour the Excavations, and leave. But those who choose to stay a few days discover a completely different territory, one of fertile countryside, quality wine production and an authentic gastronomy that has little in common with the tourist menus of the town centre.<\/p>

The Wine of Vesuvius.<\/strong> The foothill belt surrounding the volcano is one of Italy’s oldest wine-producing territories. The Vesuvio DOC includes dry whites with a mineral character and structured reds produced primarily from Piedirosso and Aglianico \u2014 indigenous grape varieties grown on porous volcanic soils rich in minerals. The local wineries organise visits and tastings, often in settings of rare natural beauty.<\/p>

The Cuisine.<\/strong> The gastronomy of the area belongs to the most genuine Campanian tradition: baked pasta, rag\u00f9 that simmers for hours, mixed fried fish, buffalo mozzarella from the Sele plain just a few kilometres away. The family-run trattorias tucked into the alleys of the town centre \u2014 not the ones with a chalkboard sign in English outside the door \u2014 offer set menus at honest prices, with house wine that is often worth more than the name on the bottle.<\/p>

Olive Oil and the Presses.<\/strong> The olive harvest is an autumn ritual that still involves many families in the area. Some oil presses open their doors to visitors during the milling season \u2014 between October and November \u2014 to demonstrate the process and let guests taste the new oil: green, peppery, on toasted bread.<\/p>
