There is a common misconception about Pompeii: that it is nothing more than an archaeological site surrounded by souvenir shops. It’s understandable \u2014 most visitors arrive, tour the Ruins, and leave. But those who choose to stay a few days discover a completely different landscape, made up of fertile countryside, quality wine production and an authentic gastronomy that has little in common with the tourist menus in the centre.<\/p>

The wine of Vesuvius.<\/strong> The foothill belt surrounding the volcano is one of the oldest wine-producing territories in Italy. The Vesuvio DOC includes dry whites with a mineral character and full-bodied reds made primarily from Piedirosso and Aglianico \u2014 native grape varieties grown on porous volcanic soils rich in minerals. The family trattorias in the lanes of the town centre \u2014 not the ones with a chalkboard menu in English outside the door \u2014 offer set menus at honest prices, with house wine that is often worth more than any name on a bottle.<\/p>

The oil and the olive presses.<\/strong> The olive harvest is an autumn ritual that still involves many local families. Some presses open their doors to visitors during the milling season \u2014 between October and November \u2014 to show the process and offer tastings of the new oil, green and peppery, on toasted bread.<\/p>
